In today’s episode I'm going to talk about a topic of what some people call 'Content into Commerce'.
Recently I was listening to a podcast where New Zealand Comedian, creator and business owner Joe Daymond talked about selling product on the back of content, which I found really interesting. And I'm going to dive into this a bit more to help you start selling a product, increase your sales or even level up your business.

In today's highly competitive business landscape, it's becoming increasingly important for businesses to build a loyal audience that can help them sell their products or services. One of the most effective ways to build an audience is through the use of media, which can include social media, blogs, podcasts, and video content.
Building an audience through media can be incredibly beneficial for businesses, regardless of their size or industry. Here are some of the key reasons why:
- Increased visibility: By creating and sharing valuable content through various media channels, businesses can increase their visibility and reach a larger audience. This can help them attract new customers and generate more sales.
- Greater engagement: Media allows businesses to connect with their audience on a deeper level by sharing insights, tips, and stories that resonate with them. This can lead to greater engagement, as well as increased loyalty and trust.
- Improved credibility: When businesses create and share high-quality media content, they establish themselves as experts in their field. This can help them build credibility and trust with their audience, which can ultimately lead to more sales.
- Better customer relationships: By building an audience through media, businesses can create a community of loyal customers who are passionate about their products or services. This can help them foster better relationships with their customers and build a strong brand identity.
- More effective marketing: Media can be a highly effective marketing tool, allowing businesses to reach their target audience in a more engaging and personalised way. By using media to promote their products or services, businesses can drive more traffic to their website and generate more leads and sales.
As I mentioned a bit earlier, I came across a podcast recently which a guy by the name of Joey Daymond was talking about how he sold a bunch of merchandise on the back of content he had created.
Here's what Joe was saying:
"What we do (at West Park) is basically create digitally first content and monetise it through independent commercial verticals. I'll give you an example, 'Bouncers' was the first one we did. So I went digital first with that, shot a web series of it. How I then made money was selling merchandise, so our first commercial verticals product"

He goes on to say: "I did this t-shirt that's of one of the characters from 'Bouncers' and sold 700 hundred t-shirts in like 24 hours. And that was like $40k-$50,000 or something crazy like that. So immediately the show is profitable"
He continues.. "Complex, I remember they did a case study on (the show) 'Hot Ones'. $20 million dollars worth of hot sauce sold that year. That as 70 percent of revenue for that company. It's not all in advertising, its in IP, it's in product"
Overall, building an audience through media is a powerful way for businesses to increase their visibility, engagement, credibility, customer relationships, and sales.
By creating and sharing valuable content through various media channels, businesses can connect with their audience on a deeper level and build a loyal community of customers who are passionate about their brand.
Lets go back to Joe as he gives another example..
"Barstool Sports have a great model. Bro, I was walking through fuckin LA, and like the frozen section (of the supermarket) and Dave Portnoy has a frozen pizza! I didn't know that. From 'One Bite Reviews' That's crazy!!"
So, if you're looking to grow your business and increase your sales, consider investing in media to build an audience. Whether you're creating blog posts, videos, or podcasts, the key is to consistently provide value to your audience and establish yourself as a trusted and reliable source of information.
I really hope you got some value out of this one and if you did, please consider sharing on your social channels for others that may also find this useful.
See you in the next one.
Peace!
